How to Use the Running Pace Calculator
This calculator works in three modes: (1) Enter distance and time to find your pace. (2) Enter pace and distance to find total time. (3) Enter pace and time to find total distance covered. Use it to plan race pacing strategy, evaluate training runs, or set realistic race goals.
Pace = Total Time / Distance
Time = Pace Γ Distance
Distance = Time / Pace
Time = Pace Γ Distance
Distance = Time / Pace
Common Race Pace Reference Points
| Race | Distance | 8:00/mi Pace Finish | "Good" Finish Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5K | 3.1 miles | ~24:50 | Under 25 min (all ages) |
| 10K | 6.2 miles | ~49:40 | Under 50 min |
| Half Marathon | 13.1 miles | ~1:44:48 | Under 2:00 |
| Marathon | 26.2 miles | ~3:29:36 | Under 4:00 |
Pacing Strategy for Races
- Even pacing: Run the same pace throughout β the most efficient strategy for most distances
- Negative splits: Run the second half slightly faster than the first β used by most elite runners
- Positive splits: Start faster and slow down β common mistake for recreational runners that leads to hitting the wall
Converting Between Pace and Speed
To convert minutes/mile to mph: 60 Γ· pace (min/mi). An 8:00/mi pace = 60 Γ· 8 = 7.5 mph. For km/h: 3.6 Γ· pace in min/km Γ 1 = pace in km/h. A 5:00/km pace = 12 km/h.
